A Brief History
Louisville’s ICAN chapter formed in 2007 after Mary Oliver Humke and Kerry Miles Wright met around Erin Vest’s kitchen table. The three chapter-founders desired to see cesarean and VBAC support for Louisville-area mothers and found a common thread (a common scar) in their own birthing stories.
As our local chapter grew, Nina Berry stepped up to help co-lead the chapter, as Mary Oliver and Kerry stepped down from their leadership positions, into supporting roles.
In late 2011, Ashley Benz joined as co-leader and Nina moved to Outreach Coordinator.
Since ICAN of Louisville’s birth, we have had a steady flow of volunteers, helping from leading Support Meetings, to presenting at meetings, distributing information to doctors’ offices, and setting up for and cleaning up from meetings. Our chapter has heard amazing vbac stories, aided families in avoiding that first cesarean, and supported mothers through their own c-sections.
