Join us to watch the inspirational documentary, ‘A Doula Story’. After the movie we’ll talk about the importance of doula support for ALL women and learn how Mama To Mama plans to bring a project like this to Louisville!

A Doula Story documents one woman’s fierce commitment to empower pregnant teenagers with the skills and knowledge they need to become confident nurturing mothers. A woman of remarkable magnetism and complexity, Loretha Weisinger returns to the same disadvantaged neighborhood, where she on

ce struggled as a teen mom. She uses compassion and humor to teach the young mothers-to-be about everything from the importance of breast-feeding and reading to their babies to the practical details of communicating effectively with health care professionals.

Teenage pregnancy is a fact of American life. Nearly 10 percent of births in this country are to teens, many of them poor, uneducated and alone. A community doula (from the Greek word for birth attendant) for more than 10 years, Loretha knows that pregnant teens need guidance and education, not judgment or pity. In the face of overwhelming challenges—from absentee fathers and drug addiction to the disparagement of society—doulas are making a difference in the futures of young mothers and their babies.

Suggested donation – $10
All donations will benefit Mama To Mama

Friends,

It has been my honor and pleasure to serve as ICAN of Louisville’s co-leader and leader for the last 5+ years. I enjoyed my time with Mary Oliver Humke and Kerry Miles Wright working to co-found our chapter 6 years ago this fall. It’s been a pleasure to volunteer alongside Mary Oliver, Kerry, Gladys, Nina, and Ashley, and I’m thankful for their hard work and dedication to improving Louisville’s birthing climate and the health and safety of our mothers and babies. It has been amazing to watch additional ICAN chapters emerge in our state, and I’ve been happy to work with them as they’ve gotten on their feet.

But after examining all the growth and changes that have taken place in my own life (two more daughters, home schooling, and… life), I have made the difficult decision to resign from my position as chapter leader at the end of the year. My heart stays close to the mission of ICAN. I am so thankful to the organization that helped equip me with knowledge as I prepared for my own two homebirth VBACs. I will continue to serve our community of women as a doula and childbirth educator, but am making the choice to take more time for my family and to hand over the chapter reins to an eager and energetic volunteer.

All of this brings me to a question for Louisville’s ICAN community: who wants my job? We are actively seeking a leader, or two to three co-leaders, who would like to lead ICAN of Louisville into 2013 and beyond. In order to make the transition process a smooth one, I would love to begin working with the new co-leader as soon as possible. If you are interested, please contact me at erin [at] icanoflouisville [dot] com. You do not have to be a current ICAN subscriber to apply, but you will need to join before your leadership application can be completed at the international level. I’m happy to answer any and all questions to give you a clear picture of what ICAN chapter leadership is like.

It has been an honor to serve alongside you!

With love,

Erin

Edited to add:  Our chapter will in fact close in January 2013 if a new leader(s) doesn’t step up.  If ICAN’s mission is something you support, please consider volunteering.
